Hashdex to Liquidate $14.7M Bitcoin ETF as U.S. Market Consolidates
- Hashdex will liquidate its $14.7 million Bitcoin ETF, DEFI, due to insufficient scale in a concentrated market.
- Shareholders can trade DEFI on NYSE Arca until August 17, after which it will be delisted.
- Investors should expect a cash liquidation distribution around August 28 if they hold the fund.
Hashdex will close and liquidate its U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETF, DEFI, after the product failed to build sufficient scale in an increasingly concentrated market. The fund held approximately $14.7 million in assets as of July 30, making it the smallest U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF.
The asset manager announced that shareholders can trade DEFI on NYSE Arca through August 17. Creation orders will stop after that date, and the shares will subsequently be delisted. Investors who continue holding the fund should receive a cash liquidation distribution around August 28.
Hashdex said it reviewed the fund’s assets under management, liquidity, operating expenses, investor demand, and position within its broader product lineup before approving the closure.
A Small Fund in a Top-Heavy Market
DEFI’s latest disclosed holdings included roughly 225.6 BTC, while its net assets had slipped to about $14.48 million by August 3. That represented less than 0.02% of the approximately $77.6 billion held across U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs.
By comparison, BlackRock’s IBIT controlled $47.08 billion on August 3, equivalent to roughly 61% of the category. The next-smallest fund, WisdomTree’s BTCW, still held about ten times more assets than DEFI.
The gap illustrates a growing challenge for smaller issuers. Bitcoin funds track nearly identical underlying exposure, leaving fees, liquidity, spreads, brand recognition, and distribution networks as the main competitive factors. DEFI charged 0.25%, matching IBIT rather than undercutting it, while its 20-day average volume stood at only 276 shares as of August 3.
The closure also comes as Bitcoin ETF demand has remained uneven, with periods of renewed inflows interrupted by large redemptions during the 2026 market downturn.
Hashdex Keeps Its Broader Crypto Bet
The decision does not signal a complete U.S. withdrawal. Hashdex continues to operate NCIQ, its multi-asset Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF, which managed approximately $209 million in late July. Bitcoin represented about 78% of that portfolio, followed by Ether, XRP, Solana, and several smaller assets.
DEFI began as a Bitcoin futures product in September 2022 and converted to a spot-holding strategy in March 2024. Its planned liquidation now appears set to become the first closure among U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, showing that strong category-wide adoption does not guarantee survival for products unable to secure meaningful liquidity and distribution.
