Coinbase Brings 24/5 US Stock Trading to UK Customers

✶ The Main Takeaways
  • Coinbase has launched 24/5 US stock trading for eligible UK customers, expanding its services beyond cryptocurrency.
  • Users can trade nearly 4,000 US stocks without commissions, though other fees may apply.
  • Investors should be aware of currency fluctuations when buying dollar-denominated shares with GBP.

Coinbase has begun rolling out access to nearly 4,000 US stocks for eligible UK customers, expanding its main app beyond crypto and into traditional brokerage. The service supports trading 24 hours a day, five days a week, with equities, digital assets, and cash displayed under the same account.

According to the company’s launch announcement, CB Payments Ltd will not charge commissions, although other fees may apply. Fractional shares start at £1, while orders can be funded directly with GBP or USDC balances.

Users buying dollar-denominated shares with pounds will remain exposed to currency fluctuations, meaning the value of their holdings can change with the GBP-USD exchange rate as well as the underlying stock price.

Brokered Shares, Not Tokenized Equities

Despite the crypto-focused interface and USDC funding option, the product provides conventional brokerage access rather than tokenized shares issued onchain.

Orders are routed to Coinbase Capital Markets, a US-registered broker-dealer, with Apex Clearing handling execution, settlement, and custody. Coinbase’s UK entity arranges access under Financial Conduct Authority authorization, which the exchange secured in July.

The 24/5 offering also has limits. Extended-hours trading is available only for eligible securities, while fractional orders remain restricted to regular US market hours. Coinbase warned that overnight sessions may carry greater volatility, wider spreads, and thinner liquidity than standard trading.

The expansion gives Coinbase another potential revenue stream as its core business remains sensitive to crypto trading activity. The company’s second-quarter results included a 21% year-over-year decline in transaction revenue to $599 million and a $359.5 million net loss.

Coinbase has not specified when every eligible UK account, or the full selection of nearly 4,000 securities, will gain access. The rollout will take place progressively through the company’s existing app.
