Cloudflare Unveils Stablecoin Wallets to Give AI Agents Spending Power

✶ The Main Takeaways
  • Cloudflare Wallets will enable AI agents to hold stablecoins and make purchases, enhancing digital service transactions.
  • Users can reserve a cloudflare.pay handle now, but full wallet functionality will be available later.
  • The success of Cloudflare Wallets depends on the rollout details, including supported stablecoins and jurisdictions.

Cloudflare announced Cloudflare Wallets on August 4, introducing a programmable payment system intended to let AI agents hold stablecoins, buy digital services and receive funds. Users can reserve a human-readable cloudflare.pay handle immediately, but the company said the wallets themselves will become usable later.

According to Cloudflare’s product announcement, the system separates funds into Account Wallets controlled by people and Virtual Wallets delegated to agents through API keys. Owners will be able to impose allowances, merchant allowlists and maximum transaction sizes, creating infrastructure-level limits on autonomous spending without requiring approval for every purchase.

The wallets are designed to work with x402, a protocol that attaches payments to HTTP requests. Cloudflare plans to connect them with its Monetization Gateway, allowing agents to pay for APIs, AI inference, data, content and MCP tools while merchants receive machine-native micropayments. Wallet identifiers may also provide agents with optional, persistent identities.

Cloudflare has not disclosed a full launch date, supported stablecoins or initial jurisdictions. It said onramps and offramps will be introduced in eligible regions, with direct stablecoin funding available as an alternative. The unanswered rollout details will determine how quickly the product moves from reserved handles to real agent commerce.
